How-To: Chic Shoelace Braid

If you think this style is impossible to replicate, think again. Hairstylist Cash Lawless shows you exactly how to recreate this chic, badass shoelace braid in minutes!

The tools you'll need:

1. Volumizing mousse
2. Hair elastics
3. Bobby pins

1. Give your hair grip.

Apply Philip B. Russian Amber Imperial Volumizing Mousse from root to end to give your hair grip, so your shoelace braids stay in tightly and the hairs don't slip out.

2. Begin tying two pieces of hair, on either side of your part, like you would a shoelace.

Part your hair down the middle, and then grab two pieces of hair on either side of your part at the point of your hairline. Tie them in a loose knot as if you're tying your shoes.

3. Add small pieces of hair to the sections you're tying.

Similar to French braiding, add small pieces of loose hair to the sections that you're tying in knots as you angle the braid down toward your ear and back toward the crown of your head.

4. Pin the shoelace braid halfway between your hairline and your crown.

Hold the braid in place by crisscrossing two bobby pins. Repeat steps one through four on the other side of your head.

5. Gather all your hair in a ponytail.

Once your two shoelace braids are secured with bobby pin "X" formations, take all the remaining hair and pull it into a high ponytail, securing it with an elastic hair band.

6. Fishtail braid the ponytail.

To fishtail braid, divide the ponytail in half and take a tiny piece of hair from the left half of the ponytail and cross it over to the right half. Then, take a piece from the right half and cross it over, incorporating it with the left half of your hair. Continue all the way to the end of your ponytail.

7. Wrap the fishtail braid around the base of the ponytail.

Position the braid in a circle on its side so you can see all the detail, and then pin it down with a bobby pin.

How to turn a Gorgeous Braid into a Pretty Bun

If you suffer from frizzy hair, straighten or tame it using your own methods, but remember to keep it healthy.

  • Start braiding your hair on the two sides of your head. Do not braid your whole hair, just two big front locks of it, as shown on the picture.
  • Tie the two braids on the bag of your head.
  • Twist your hair as shown on the picture, so that you get a big, pretty bun at the end of the two braids.

How to curl hair with a straightener

Have you had your hair curled with a flat iron at the salon, only to have it fall flat by the time you get home? Now, you can recreate this look yourself by following some simple steps:

Make sure your hair is brushed through.

If you have a heat-protecting serum at home, place a small amount of it on your palm and apply to your hair, working from root to tip. This will help prevent heat from damaging the hair.
Clip up the top layers of your hair, and begin with the bottom. Remove a small section of hair that has been clipped up. Place the lower part of the sectioned hair between the plates, twist it over one of the plates, and close the straightener.

Slowly pull your hair through the straightener until all of it has passed between the two hot plates. The slower you pull, the more defined the curl will be.
Wrap the curled hair around your finger to help define the curl. After pulling your finger out of the curled hair, use a hair spray on the curls, so that the curl lasts.

How to grow out a pixie cut

You've decided to switch from your cute little pixie cut to a longer hairstyle. Enter the ugly in-between phase of growing it out. It's a challenge to look presentable during this awkward phase, when your hair gets wilder by the day. Here's what to do.

Trim and trim again

Keep trimming your hair as it grows out. By chopping the ends, you will prevent split ends from moving up the length of your locks, and save the strands from breaking.

Feed your hair

Nourish your hair from within by consuming plenty of water, fresh fruit and vegetables. Pamper your locks with a DIY treatment. For instance, you could massage coconut milk — known to be rich in vitamins — into your scalp before shampooing for a few weeks.

Try other hairstyles

As your hair grows out, try other hairstyles that will flatter your face and short mane — a choppy bob or beach waves, for instance.

Get the wet look

The wet-hair look will prevent frizz from marring your outings. To get it right, dry your hair halfway after shampooing. Apply wet-look gel and scrunch it up. Brush with a wide-toothed comb and dry lightly.

Easy hacks to maintain curly hair

Curly hair is tough to manage. Apart from frizziness, other issues include dryness, tangled hair, split-ends, and many more. Here are a few simple.

No shampoo:

Also known as the no-poo method, many swear by this. Instead of shampoo, use a conditioner to wash your hair.

Use a t-shirt:

While drying your hair, switch your towel with a cotton t-shirt. It reduces breakage and frizzy hair.

Use a hairnet:

For gentle curls, shower with a hairnet on. It cleans the hair while maintaining the hair.

Wash without a wash:

Between hair washes, you can refresh your curls by just spraying a refresher. Mix equal amounts of leave-in conditioner and water. Spray it all over your hair and put a hairnet on to maintain curls, till your hair dry.

5 Beach babe hairstyles

Hello beach! We have been dreaming of you. You have been our favourite secret place to let our minds wander during the dull months of winter.

It's taken us a while, but we have finally made you our real destination. Now that we have pushed our black suits to the back of the wardrobe and overdosed on candy-hued pastels it's time to hibernate the monotonous sleekness of tight ponytails and neat office buns. We want our hair to be carefree, sexy, tousled and adventurous: We want beach hair! The key to this look is to make your hair seem inherently effortless and feminine.

Mermaid waves:

Mermaid waves are the most fitting look for the beach. Nothing says summer-at-the-beach like a tousled mane of bouncing locks. If your hair is thin try using a thickening shampoo that will help give you volume. For thicker hair, anti-frizz serums work wonders to keep it from going wild. To achieve the curls use large Velcro rollers or create waves by carefully twisting them around a flat iron. If your hair is naturally wavy, Asgar recommends applying salt spray to your damp hair and scrounging it up to create lovely messy waves.

Innocent halo braid:

If you are planning on lying for hours toasting in the sun, it's time to learn how to halo braid. This practical hairstyle feminine, yet very low maintenance. Most importantly, it allows you to keep your hair away from your face. Create two braids on either side of your head and wrap them across the front so they overlap. Tuck the ends of the plaits and secure them with bobby pins.

Dip-dyed surfer hair:

The dip-dyed trend is here to stay. If you've been wanting change your look, Summer is the ideal time to be spontaneous. Colour the ends of your hair to get a radiant fun-loving beach look. Lighter colours scream summer, however make sure not to go too light as the sun often causes the colour of hair to become lighter also.

Dreamy half-up half-down up do:

This is a simple and flattering way to gather your hair for a long beach day. Braid your hair while it's still damp to create loose waves and then sweep the top of your hair backwards and create a messy bun or an undone braid.

The just-back-from-a-swim 'wet look':

A wet look style is a refreshing solution to a sizzling day at the beach. The essence of this hairstyle is to look like you've just emerged from the sea. Go for a fully wet look by generously applying volumiser to dampen the hair and thoroughly combine it backwards to achieve the slicked-back look. Use a strong finishing spray to hold it in place as well as a high-shine product to make it look glossy.

All you need to know about rebonding

Before you go ahead for a major transformation with rebonding, it is necessary that you know all about the procedure beforehand and be well aware of what it entails.

In rebonding, chemicals are used to break the natural bonds of the cells in the hair and then they are rearranged to get straight hair, Rod Anker, Creative Director of Monsoon Salon and Spa, that offer a huge discount on rebonding, said. Anker explained that a relaxant or a softener is used to break the natural bonds in the hair, followed by a neutralizer to re-bond the structure again, giving you the desired texture.

Suguna Shah, of Lakme Salon, continued saying that rebonding is almost hassle-free - especially if you are doing it during the summers or as the climate warms up. You just need to condition hair well and protect it from heat and it will not get damaged, she asserted. Since care in the first few days after rebonding is crucial, Shah said that it is necessary that you keep hair covered and protected. Also do not wet your hair for three days after the procedure, because the chemicals have to seep in and settle. (

Haire Style : Vintage Faux Bob

Sometimes even the girls with the most beautiful long hairs dream of having a shorter hair cut, even just for a day. We have a solution for such moments – the vintage faux bob.

You will need:

• Metal styling clips (short and long)
• A 1/2-inch curling iron
• Bobby pins
• Tissue
• Hair elastics
• Hairspray

What to do:

1. Divide your hair into 4 sections – at the front, at the back and to the sides.

2. Curl each section, except from the nape at the back, using your curling iron. Secure each curl with a clip, as shown on the picture.

3. Release the back section and braid it against the head. If you don`t feel confident enough, ask a friend for some help.

4. Carefully release the curls

5. Depending on where you want the waves to fall, use long styling clips and tissue to clip them.

6. Now separate your hair into two sections, as if you are making pigtails and wrap some tissue around each section.

7. Remove the tissue from one side and start rolling the length of your hair under.

8. Keep rolling until you reach the nape of your neck. Secure with bobby pins.

9. Do the same with the other side

10. Finally, remove the clips and tissue from the front section and spread it over the rest of the hair.
